BRIEF OUTLINE: This is a Christmas game show activity which acts a review for Grade 3 classes.

 

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • ChristmasGameShow attachment: The attachment is for the teachers' eyes only. The questions which require pictures are not included.

 

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. Firstly, split the class into three groups. I find that three works best as it can be two full rows per team (Japanese classes usually having 6 rows per class).
  2. Each team chooses a name related to Christmas (this can be more fun than you think) and a scoreboard should be drawn up on the blackboard. While they are thinking of a name, write the numbers 1-20 on the chalkboard.
  3. Game starts by one student from each of the three groups standing up. Ask the first question on the attachment. The fastest student to raise their hand and answer the question correctly receives one point for their team. If they answer incorrectly, the other two teams janken to see who gets the next chance. If nobody knows the answer, each team has the option of using their 'audience' cheat and having the other members of their team helping them with the answer. 2 per team.
  4. There are a number of double point questions which, obviously, mean that the correct answer is worth two points.
  5. When a team answers correctly, erase number one from the board and allow that team to choose the next number trivia question. This adds a bit of intrigue because the students are hoping to get a double point question.
  6. I give each correct answer a sticker and the winning team a sticker each.

VARIATIONS:

  • If you don't want to explain the rules then you can introduce them as the game is going on.
  • The type of answer you accept is up to you. If you have a weaker class then you can accept 'yes/no' or alternatively even make your own easier questions. I generally ask for full sentence answers: "Yes, I do."

  • It can get rowdy so best to warn the JTE beforehand.
