BRIEF OUTLINE: This activity is designed for 1st year JHS. It lets the students practice using does and doesn't. And play janken. A lot.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. After introducing the Xmas characters and items, and reviewing "he/she does/doesn't", hand out the gamesheets and 3 point tokens to the students. They choose one room they want to be in, and mark it in the grey box.
  2. The students find a partner, play Janken, and the winner (Player A) asks "Whose room are you in?"
Player B replies with the master of the room he/she marked (one of the 4 Christmas characters) - i.e. "I'm in Mrs. Claus' room.
  3. The first student then asks the question from a specific room - i.e. "Does Mrs. Claus have a present?"
  4. If that is the room that Player B has marked, then he/she replies "Yes, she does.", gives up a point token, then switches gamesheets with Player A. They then find new partners.
  5. If Player B marked a different room, then he/she says "No, she doesn't.". It is then Player B's turn to ask the questions.

TEACHING SUGGESTIONS:

  • Students like giving one word answers, which negates the aim of this activity. I've found that it really helps to drill the students for full "Yes/No, he/she does/doesn't." answers before playing this game.
