BRIEF OUTLINE: Student's watch the 1966 (25min) cartoon version of Dr. Seuss's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." They use the worksheet to listen for vocabulary words then answer questions.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

DETAILED EXPLANATION:

  1. First I will go through the vocabulary words at the top of the worksheet and tell them that they need to listen and see if they can check off each word when they hear the word spoken in the film. Challenge them to check them all off.
  2. Go through the questions in the worksheet emphasizing that they need to find those answers as they watch the movie. You might want to give them a quick summary:
    • The Who's were happy to celebrate Christmas! They had Stockings! (emphasize key Christmasy words), decorations, candy-canes, and a big Christmas tree.
    • But the Grinch doesn't like Christmas. He doesn't like singing. He doesn't like noise. His heart is too small!  He decides to stop Christmas from coming! So he puts on a Santa hat, and a Santa coat, and ties his dog max to his sleigh as a reindeer.
    •  Then he steals all the presents, decorations, candy-canes and even the Christmas tree. He thinks the Who's will be sad. BUT On Christmas morning they are not sad. They stand together and sing anyway.
    • What! Christmas isn't about presents? food? or toys? The grinch didn't stop Christmas! Christmas doesn't come from a store!?
    • When he hears the Who's singing his heart gets big, and he brings everything back and has Christmas together with the Whos.
